Children's book author Judy Blume has always been controversial. Her book Forever, which details teen sex, has been frequently challenged by concerned adults.
And who wouldn't be concerned about Blume's books? She frequently discusses sexual topics, including intercourse and masturbation, in a style aimed at 10- to 14-year-olds. Her approach rarely contains any moral slant, and adults are almost always absent. Forget any concern for whether sex is right or wrong, or should be deferred until children are older. Those concepts aren't included in Blume's books.
Given Blume's amoral books, I wasn't surprised at all to hear that she's the Mother's Day fundraising spokesman for Planned Parenthood. Mother's Day? Mother's Day?
Sometimes I think PP does these things just to aggravate us. "There is no organization that I know of that supports motherhood and all that it means more than Planned Parenthood"?
Jill Stanek's site includes Blume's pitch letter, and it's a must-read. If we didn't know they were so serious, we'd have to wonder about Planned Parenthood's collective sanity.
