The Associated Press says that, according to commanders, strategists, and intelligence officers, the surge is working.
Unsurprisingly, Americans show more support for the war when they think we're winning.
The first story goes to great pains to explain that our military personnel aren't guaranteeing victory. That will depend on the Iraqis themselves. Stabilizing their country so democracy becomes a possibility is the best we can do.
Most importantly, stabilizing Iraq prevents terrorists from using it as a staging area, and a democracy in an Arab state may provide incentive for other countries to follow suit.
As Rush Limbaugh has said on his show repeatedly, Americans want to win. They don't want to leave Iraq because they know leaving Iraq--no matter how it is dressed up by Democrats--is defeat. It doesn't take a crystal ball to see American optimism show up if they think we're gaining ground.
