Jerry Falwell Dies...and Liberals Show Some of that Compassion They Are So Well Known For

I was just about to post on Jerry Falwell's death when I happened to look at Common Sense Political Thought where Dana beat me to it. Dana brings up the typical moonbat vitriol of Amanda "I'm sorry if I offended anyone" Marcotte.

What is it with liberals wanting everyone they disagree with to die?

I mean, we have nutroots at the Huffington Post who were upset Dick Cheney wasn't killed.

We have Julianne Malveaux who wanted Justice Clarence Thomas to die because--gasp!--he was conservative.

There was Nina Totenberg, who wanted Jesse Helms to get AIDS and die.

Al Franken joked about Scooter Libby being executed.

And there's other, lesser known liberal idiots like charlie Brooker of the Guardian who called for the assassination of President Bush.

I'm all for free speech, but is there some particular reason so many on the left can't be polite about death? I mean, even Atrios, with whom I disagree about 99.999999999999999999999999999999% of the time was polite.
What to say? Obviously sympathies to those who cared for him. Many undeserving people have good people around them. It's hard to have sympathies for those who fault other victims for their tragedies...

He lived a decent-length, if not long, life. One hopes he finds that his God is a more forgiving being than he believed.

It's not that there's something wrong with pointing out things Falwell said with which one disagrees (his remark about AIDS being God's punishment for homosexuality, for instance, or that 9/11 was God's retribution for feminism, homosexuality, etc.). I consider that to be an honest assessment. But is it rational--not to even mention normal--for someone to say
The gates of hell swing open and Satan welcomes his beloved son

I suppose such childish "cleverness" is to be expected of the person who issued a fake apology in a vain attempt to keep her job with the John Edwards campaign. But it's nice to know that 1 in a million lefties can actually leave a more mature post for an obituary.

    Sharon,

Falwell was a man who usurped religion in an effort to gain temporal power. He also blamed 9/11 on those who had the audacity to hold political opinions different than him.

Somehow, I'm unable to develop any outrage at "liberals" (who you claim to speak for) who are happy about his passing.* They appear to have their reasons for being angry at the guy. You, however, are without excuse in your insulting blanket statement about all liberals.

*If it makes you feel better, his death doesn't make a huge difference to me in that I believe that there'll someone who'll take his place in the public eye. But I won't feign sadness.

  2. Falwell was also a man who started a church from scratch and grew it to be quite large. He also built Christian elementary schools, a home for unwed mothers, an a home for alcoholics.

He apologized for the statements he made about homosexuals and feminists. Which is more than any liberal will do about what they are saying about Falwell today.

I don't have a problem with liberals hating Jerry Falwell. If I behaved as they do, I'd hate him, too. But the man also spent an enormous amount of time and money helping people, and it seems like most liberals whine that conservatives are too "greedy" and "selfish" to help anyone.

I hope my blanket statement about liberals is insulting. It should be.

Maybe if liberals spent less time making obnoxious statements, they'd get more credit when they say sane things. Unfortunately, churlish shrews like Amanda Marcotte and the Pandagonistas are the most prominent examples of liberalism we have.

Good post Sharon. We have also been following the Leftist hate fest that just seemed to explode at the death of Falwell. Their bitterness and hatred is always just underneath the surface waiting to explode at any time.

I enjoyed my visit to your blog, keep it up.

  4. Sharon: I don't know enough about Rev. Falwell to be aware of the time and money he has spent helping people; all I'm aware of is the fact that his words declared him to be my enemy.

I won't dance on his grave, because I don't do that; but I cannot bring myself to mourn his passing.

And yet, having refrained from making obnoxious statements, your blanket statements make me guilty by association. That's hardly a fit reward for moderation. :)

  5. Good point, Aphrael, and I apologize for my predictable tendency towards generalizations. :X
