"No young, bright individual wants to fight just because of a bonus and just because of educational benefits."

So says Democrat Charles Rangel about our soldiers in Iraq. I have to say I agree with that statement. They aren't fighting just to get benefits. They are fighting because they believe in the cause they signed up for.

Great stuff over at Villainous Company, where Cassandra explains why you can't take Rangel's words at face value. Just like John Kerry, he obviously doesn't mean to insult our military, just point out how they are all poor, uneducated, and unemployable. He meant to say...well, what did he mean to say?

Please read the rest of Cassandra's post. I'm sure you'll come away feeling as sorry for Rangel as I did.

Sorry, I thought I'd already linked you to a proper transcript of what Kerry meant to say, and how he flubbed the joke. But perhaps not. Here it is: What Kerry meant to say, and an analysis of why the joke he made about Bush went wrong.

  2. I posted about what John Kerry says he meant to say back when he insulted the American military.

Unfortunately for him, and you, he didn't say that. He said something quite different, and something that really sounded a lot more like the John Kerry who defamed American soldiers three decades ago.

  3. Yeah, he flubbed the joke. It was clear from context what he meant - he was making a joke about Bush - but unfortunately, because he flubbed, it was easy to take one line completely out of context and pretend he was making the joke about US soldiers in Iraq, rather than about President Bush.

Did you ever read Kerry's testimony to the Senate in 1971? Just as his joke about Bush was twisted out of context and claimed to be a defamation of US soldiers, so have false out of context claims been made about Kerry's testimony 35 years ago, which are easily seen to be false when you read the whole thing.

  4. It's always unfortunate when someone is born with a silver foot in his mouth, as Ann Richards once said of George H.W. Bush (personally, it seems to fit Kerry to a "T"). Nonetheless, he didn't say what you wish he'd said. He said something that was very insulting to our soldiers.

Are you going to try to defend Rangel or are you going to continue whining about Kerry's *sob* mistreatment by those mean ol' Republicans/media/Swiftboat Vets?
